Do you have any questions for us?
What they are really testing: This is not a throwaway, it is part of the evaluation. Having no questions signals low interest or low engagement. Good questions show you are genuinely thinking about the role and treating it as a two-way decision, which strong candidates do.
A real interview question
Do you have any questions for us?
What most people say
drag me
“No, I think you covered everything, thanks.”
Having no questions reads as disengaged or uninterested, even if you are just nervous. It wastes a real chance to show enthusiasm and judgment, and it makes you forgettable compared to a candidate who asks something thoughtful.
The follow-ups they ask next
Is it okay to ask about salary or time off here?
Not as your first or main questions, it reads as focused on the wrong thing this early. Lead with the work, growth, and team. Compensation is a fair topic, but better at the offer stage or if they raise it.
What if they genuinely answered everything during the interview?
Still ask something, prepare more than you need. You can say "you covered a lot of what I had, but I am curious about..." and ask about growth, the team, or build on something they said. Never end with zero questions.
What the interviewer is listening for
- Comes prepared with thoughtful questions
- Asks about the work, growth, mentorship
- Builds on something said earlier
What sinks the answer
- "No, you covered everything"
- Leads with salary/time off/promotion
- Questions show no thought or research
If you genuinely do not know
Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.
“Yes, a few. [What would I work on in the first months and what does doing well look like early]. [How does the team support people who are growing, mentorship/code review], since I am early-career. And building on [something they said earlier], [a specific question about it]. The reason I ask is [I want this to be the right fit on both sides].”
