What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

What they are really testing: The strength tests self-awareness and relevance, the weakness tests honesty and growth. They are screening out two failure modes: a strength with no evidence, and a fake weakness ("I work too hard") that signals you cannot be self-critical.

A real interview question

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

What most people say

drag me

My biggest strength is that I am a perfectionist, and honestly my biggest weakness is also that I am a perfectionist and care too much.

This is the textbook fake answer, a disguised brag instead of a real weakness, and it signals you are either not self-aware or unwilling to be honest. The strength is also a label with no evidence behind it.

The follow-ups they ask next

  • Why is "I am a perfectionist" a bad weakness to give?

It is a transparent humblebrag, interviewers hear it constantly and read it as evasive or not self-aware. They want a genuine weakness plus what you are doing about it, which shows honesty and growth, the real thing being tested.

  • How do you pick a safe but honest weakness?

Choose a real one that is not core to the job and that you are actively improving (e.g. asking for help sooner, public speaking, a specific skill you are learning). Honesty plus a concrete improvement plan is the winning combination.

What the interviewer is listening for

  • Strength backed by a concrete example
  • A genuine, non-disqualifying weakness
  • Shows active steps to improve it

What sinks the answer

  • Fake weakness (perfectionist / works too hard)
  • Strength with no evidence
  • A weakness that disqualifies them with no growth shown

If you genuinely do not know

Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.

Strength: [one relevant strength] and here is the evidence: [a concrete example, e.g. I learned containers/cloud from zero on my project]. Weakness: [a genuine one, e.g. I tried to solve everything alone before asking], and I am [actively fixing it, e.g. timeboxing then asking a specific question]. I would rather give a [real weakness I am improving than a fake one].
