What they are really testing: At senior level they are testing whether you create durable ownership beyond yourself, or whether you just become the new single point of failure.

A real interview question

Tell me about a system or process that had no clear owner and was quietly hurting the organisation. How did you take it on, and how did you hand it off?

What most people say

drag me

Nobody was looking after it so I just took it over. I basically became the go to person for that system and I still am.

Becoming the permanent single point of failure is the failure mode, not the win, and senior interviewers hear it immediately.

The follow-ups they ask next

  • What would you have done if no team would take it?

Escalate with the risk quantified, propose deprecation or a funded owner, and put a decision date on it. Do not silently keep carrying it.

  • How did you make sure the new owners were actually capable?

Talk about shadowing a rotation, a handover checklist, and a defined period where you were backup but not primary.

What the interviewer is listening for

  • Separated stabilising from owning
  • Reduced the operational cost to make handover possible
  • Quantified steady state effort to negotiate with
  • Deliberately stepped back so ownership stuck

What sinks the answer

  • Became the permanent single point of failure
  • Handed it over with no runbook or inventory
  • No incident or cost numbers before and after
  • Frames the reorg or other teams as the villain

If you genuinely do not know

Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.

I have not rehomed an orphaned system yet, but here is how I would reason about it: stabilise it cheaply first, measure how much work it really is per month, then use that number to find it a permanent owner rather than quietly keeping it.
