Why are you leaving your current job?
What they are really testing: They are checking two things, whether you are running toward something or just running away, and whether you will speak badly about the people who employ you today.
A real interview question
Why are you leaving your current job?
What most people say
drag me
“Honestly, the management is a mess, there is no growth, and I am underpaid for what I do.”
Even when every word is true, it tells the interviewer how you will describe them in a year, and it makes your next move sound like an escape rather than a choice.
The follow-ups they ask next
If your company offered you a cloud role tomorrow, would you stay?
Be honest but grounded. Say what would have to be true, a real team and real scope, and note that it does not exist there today.
What did your manager say when you told them you were looking?
Do not invent drama. A calm answer, that you have been open about wanting cloud work and they know the company cannot offer it, reads as adult.
Is this about money?
Do not pretend money is irrelevant. Say pay matters and you expect it to follow the work, then return to scope and learning as the driver.
What the interviewer is listening for
- Speaks respectfully about the current employer while still being honest
- Shows an attempt to grow inside the role before deciding to leave
- The reason is a ceiling on scope, not a grievance about people
- The answer ends pointing forward at this specific job
What sinks the answer
- Criticising a named manager or colleague to a stranger
- Vague dissatisfaction with no attempt to fix anything first
- Money as the only stated reason, with nothing about the work
- A story that would repeat itself here within six months
If you genuinely do not know
Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.
“I want to answer this without being unfair to my current employer, so let me put it as a ceiling rather than a complaint. Here is what I hit, here is what I tried, and here is what I am looking for next.”
