The apology and the passive framing hand the interviewer a problem to worry about, and it leaves fourteen months looking like fourteen months of nothing, which is almost never the truth.
The follow-ups they ask next
Is your caring situation resolved, or could it pull you away again?
Answer the real question directly. Say what the arrangement is now, and that you would flag anything early rather than disappear. Do not be defensive.
Tell me about that 40 minute outage.
This is a gift. Walk the timeline, what you saw, what you checked, how you fixed it, and what you changed so it cannot happen again.
Do you feel rusty?
Say honestly where you are rusty and where you are sharp, then point at the live project as proof that your hands still work.
What the interviewer is listening for
- States the gap calmly, in the first sentence, without apologising
- Distinguishes honestly between the hard months and the productive ones
- Has something countable to show for the time, not just intentions
- Closes by confirming the circumstance has ended
What sinks the answer
- Evasiveness or shifting dates when the gap is raised
- Over apologising, which signals the candidate expects to be rejected
- Claiming the entire period was spent studying when it clearly was not
- Blaming the market for everything with no personal action described
If you genuinely do not know
Say this instead of freezing. Reasoning out loud from what you do know beats silence every single time, and a good interviewer is listening for exactly that.
“I would rather be straight about this than dress it up. The gap was from this date to this date, the reason was this, here is the one thing I have to show for it, and it is behind me now.”
